Douglas Dunn

“You can’t teach somebody how to really dance,” says Salinger’s Holden Caulfield. True? Definitely the case when it comes to composition. I don’t presume to teach a way, or ways, to make dances: the mandate of the modern anti-tradition is not the Chinese ideal for painters of close imitation of the master. Rather, in the spirit of breakaway invention, we will share the experience of putting things together and of seeing, having begun one way or another, what happens. We won’t worry about where material comes from, but will certainly do our best to agitate the source. Then, looking at what appears, and cultivating all points of the rational/intuitive spectrum, we will decide if we want to change it. Elements that inevitably present themselves for consideration: shape—rhythm—tempo— space—demeanor.

Cost: $100 workshop is limited to 15 students.
